Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) now covered under BIS-CRS

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a legislative update amending the 2021 Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) by specifically including Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) under the list of regulated electronic goods.  Applicable standard for the Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) required to comply with Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010. 

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a legislative update amending the 2021 Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) by specifically including Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) under the list of regulated electronic goods. 

Applicable standard for the Standalone Hard Disk Drives (HDDs/Hard Drives) required to comply with Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010. 

The mandate for these standalone storage devices is scheduled to come into effect from 05 November 2026. 

Precap, the following storage devices were already covered under the earlier regulatory framework:
• USB Type External Hard Disk Drives
• USB Type External Solid-State Storage Devices (capacity above 256 GB)  

This formal announcement serves to ensure public interest by enforcing standardised safety and quality benchmarks for storage hardware sold within the country.
