The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued the much-awaited Series Guidelines for products covered under IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. 

Under these guidelines, multiple models can now be included under a single BIS registration, provided the models comply with all prescribed criteria. 

Key Highlights of the Series Guidelines 

Under the guidelines, applicants can include: 

  1. A maximum of 10 models in one series registration (1 Lead Model + 9 Series Models). 
  1. The worst-case configuration/highest power rating model shall be selected for testing. 

MeitY has further issued detailed guidelines covering various product aspects, including: 

Product Parameters majorly covered External Structure, Power Input Sources, and Energy Sources to include in a series: 

1. Same IP Ratings 

2. Same Enclosure Requirements with a few permissible aesthetic changes. 

3. Same Class of Construction. 

4. Same Energy Source and Safeguard System:  

  • ES1/ES2/ES3 (Electrical) 
  • PS1/PS2/PS3 (Power) 
  • TS1/TS2/TS3 (Thermal) 

5. External Energy Source (Power Adapter / Power Bank / Other Input Devices. 

6. Mains-operated Internal Power Supply. 

7. Internal Battery-operated Products.

Additional product-specific Series Requirements: 

All product models within a series shall also adhere to the following additional guidelines along with the above: 

  1. Same type of microphone and earphone(e.g., clip-type, handheld, over-the-ear, etc.) 
  2. Same form factor, wherever applicable (e.g., HDDs, SSDs)
  3. Same type of charging method (Docking/Contact Charging, USB, Charging Case, Wireless, etc.).
  4. Smartwatches with SIM and without SIM shall be considered under separate series.
  5. Devices with and without a display shall be considered under separate series.
  6. Devices with and without touch functionality shall be considered under separate series.
  7. Same output ratings and number of outputs shall be maintained wherever applicable (e.g., SMPS, power adapters with multiple output ports)
  8. Same type of display (LCD, LED, etc.), wherever applicable.
  9. Multiple processors may be used within a series; however, the lead model shall include the processor configuration with the highest Thermal Design Power (TDP) in watts.

What’s Next? 

Since the Series Guidelines and the UTRF (Uniform Test Report Format) are out along with the BIS-empanelled laboratories in place for IS/ IEC 62368-1, OEM’s/ Brands may gear up for: 

  • Fresh registrations as per the new standard; and 
  • Transition applications for already registered products to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.
