MeitY Introduces Series Guidelines for XR Products Under BIS

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a series of guidelines for Extended Reality (XR) products. These guidelines allow multiple models to be covered under one registration, as long as they meet the specified conditions.  The Extended Reality product category has been newly added under BIS-CRS and is effective from 05 December 2020. 

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a series of guidelines for Extended Reality (XR) products. These guidelines allow multiple models to be covered under one registration, as long as they meet the specified conditions. 

The Extended Reality product category has been newly added under BIS-CRS and is effective from 05 December 2020. 

 Products Covered: 

  • Augmented Reality (AR) 
  • Virtual Reality (VR) 
  • Mixed Reality (MR) 

Important Condition: 

  • AR, VR, and MR products will form separate series. 
  • No overlap is allowed between AR, VR, and MR products. 
  • One test report can cover a maximum of 10 models.
    (1 Lead Model + up to 9 Series Models). 

 Series Guidelines 

All models in a series must have the same energy source and safety system.
Different cases are explained below: 

  1. External Energy Source

(Power Adapter / Power Bank / Other Input Devices) 

  • Alternate power adapter models may be included in the evaluation. 
  • The main product must have the same power requirement. 
  • A registered power adapter or power bank must be provided. 
  • The adapter capacity must be equal to or higher than the rated capacity. 

  1. Mains Operated with Internal Power Supply

  • The mains layout or SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) board layout must be the same. 
  • The power transformer (if used) must have the same design and insulation system. 

  1. Battery-Operated (Internal Battery)

  • Models with different battery capacities can be part of the same series. 
  • The lead model must be tested with the highest battery capacity. 
  • The battery is treated as a component. 
  • Alternate battery sources may be evaluated as part of the main product. 

 Common Requirements for All Series Models 

All models in a series must have: 

  • The same class of construction 
  • The same enclosure material
    (colour or minor cosmetic changes are allowed) 
  • The same PCB layout design 
  • The same type of display (LED / LCD / AMOLED, etc.) 
  • The same IP rating 

Important Note: 

 If an external energy source is not supplied with the product, the specifications and ratings of the required power adapter or power bank must be clearly mentioned on the product or in the catalogue. 

 BIS-CRS Preparedness 

  • The CRS portal now lists “Extended Reality” as a product category. 
  • Testing and certification will be done as per IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. 
  • Manufacturers and importers can start testing and apply for approval under this category.
