India Introduces Standard Pack Sizes for Edible Oils

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued an advisory under the Legal Metrology framework recommending standardised pack sizes for major edible oils to enhance consumer transparency, facilitate price comparison, and promote uniform packaging practices across the industry.  Prescribed Standard Pack Sizes  For major edible oils such as palm oil, soybean

The Department of Consumer Affairs has issued an advisory under the Legal Metrology framework recommending standardised pack sizes for major edible oils to enhance consumer transparency, facilitate price comparison, and promote uniform packaging practices across the industry. 

Prescribed Standard Pack Sizes 

For major edible oils such as palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, mustard oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, rice bran oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, and their blends, the recommended pack sizes are: 

  • 200 ml / 200 g
  • 500 ml / 500 g
  • 1 L / 1 kg
  • 2 L / 2 kg
  • 3 L / 3 kg
  • 4 L / 4 kg
  • 5 L / 5 kg
  • 15 L / 15 kg
  • 20 L / 20 kg

Packages below 200 ml/g remain unrestricted. 

Additional Requirements 

  • Volume declarations must also include the equivalent weight declaration. 
  • Applicable to both domestically manufactured and imported edible oils. 
  • A transition period of three months has been provided for implementation.
