The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Laboratory and Sample Analysis) Amendment Regulations, 2026, introducing changes to the requirements governing food sample analysis, testing methods, and reporting timelines.
Effective from: 1 April 2027
Under the amended regulations, laboratories must use the latest testing methods prescribed by FSSAI. If FSSAI does not prescribe a method for a particular test, laboratories may use recognised methods issued by organisations such as AOAC, ISO, IUPAC, Codex Alimentarius or BIS.
The amendment also specifies timelines for reporting analytical results:
- Regulatory samples: Within 14 days
- Appeal samples: Within 14 days
- Imported food samples: Within 5 days
If a laboratory is unable to complete the analysis within the prescribed timeline, it must communicate the reason for the delay and the additional time required to the relevant authority.
What Stakeholders Should Review
Food businesses and laboratories should assess their existing testing and compliance processes, including:
- Use of the latest applicable FSSAI-prescribed testing methods
- Laboratory testing and reporting turnaround times
- The 5-day reporting timeline for imported food samples
- Processes for communicating delays in analysis
- Applicable sampling and sample quantity requirements
The changes are particularly relevant to food manufacturers, importers, Food Analysts, and FSSAI-notified laboratories involved in food testing, sample analysis, and regulatory compliance.
