BIS has released FAQs clarifying the migration from IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 / IS 616:2017 to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, which serve as a technical roadmap for industry stakeholders to align with the latest regulatory frameworks for electronic equipment safety.

Here are the major takeaways:

Registration Number: Existing R-number will remain unchanged after successful migration, which means the same licence, new standard.  Further, new models tested to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 can be included under an existing licence issued against the old standards, subject to BIS requirements.

Migration Fee: Additionally, no fee is applicable for migrating already registered models.

Parallel Testing: Components and end products covered under the CRO may be tested in parallel, subject to the applicable BIS Parallel Testing Guidelines.

Registration Validity: Registration renewal under the old standards is permitted up to 1 November 2028. After the concurrent-running period, new licences will have to follow IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.

BIS Standard Mark: Products complying with IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 must carry the BIS Standard Mark as per the applicable BIS labelling requirements.

Lab readiness: Recognized laboratories are available for testing against IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.

Lead Model / EOL Scenario: If the existing lead model has become End-of-Life (EOL), it can be withdrawn, and the next appropriate lead model in the same series can be identified for migration.
