The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued guidance regarding the product categories and sub-categories for Wearable Glasses covered under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. 

The guidance provides clarity on how different types of Wearable Glasses should be classified and applied under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). 

Classification of Wearable Glasses 

1.  Audio Glasses

  • Product Category: Wireless Earphones and Headphones
  • Sub-category: Audio Glasses 

Products with Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity, microphone and speaker, audio calling, music playback and similar functionalities, including an AI-based voice assistant. 

2. Smart Glasses – Camera for Photographs

  • Product Category: Digital Camera
  • Sub-category: Smart Glasses 

Audio Glasses features, with or without such features, along with a camera capable of capturing photographs only. 

3. Smart Glasses – Camera for Photos & Videos

  • Product Category: Video Camera
  • Sub-category: Smart Glasses 

Audio Glasses features, with or without such features, along with a camera capable of capturing both photographs and videos. 

4. AR Glasses

  • Product Category:  Extended Reality Products
  • Sub-category: AR Glasses 

Features of Smart Glasses, with or without such features, along with an overlay display visible through the lenses. 

5. MR Glasse

  • Product Category: Extended Reality Products
  • Sub-category: MR Glasses 

Extended Reality Products 

For Extended Reality Products (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, etc.), the following product names have been specified: 

  • AR Glasses
  • Other AR Devices
  • VR Headset
  • MR Glasses
  • Other MR Devices 

This notification provides important clarity for manufacturers, importers, and brand owners dealing with Audio/Video smart Glasses, and other Extended Reality smart Glass devices under BIS CRS. 

A separate license will be required for each product name specified in the BIS notification at table 2,3

Correct product classification at the initial stage can help ensure the appropriate testing and BIS registration process.
