The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, has issued an advisory clarifying the use of customary units such as inches, feet, yards, square feet, and dozen as supplementary declarations alongside standard SI units under the Legal Metrology framework. 

Key Clarifications 

  • Standard SI metric units remain the legally recognised units under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009  
  • Customary units may be displayed only as additional information  
  • SI units must be declared prominently on packaging and declarations  
  • In case of inconsistency, SI unit declarations shall prevail  
  • Supplementary declarations must not mislead consumers or create ambiguity  

Examples Permitted 

  • 1 metre (39.37 inches) 
  • 1 square metre (10.76 square feet) 
  • 12 numbers (1 dozen) 
  • 139 cm (55-inch television screen size)

The advisory aims to improve ease of trade, consumer understanding, and alignment with international commercial practices while maintaining compliance with Legal Metrology requirements. 

Manufacturers, importers, packers, and dealers are advised to review product declarations to ensure conformity with the updated clarification.
