The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced an important update under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS).

As per the recent BIS Conformity Assessment Amendment Regulations, 2026, the validity of BIS registration has now been extended to 5 years, replacing the earlier validity period of 2 years at the time of registration.

With this change, manufacturers can now apply for both new registration and renewal of Registration only for a 5-year validity period. Earlier, new registrations were granted by default for 2 years, while renewal applications could be submitted for validity periods of 2, 3, 4, or 5 years.

However, although the registration validity will remain for 5 years, the applicable grant or renewal fees must still be paid on an annual basis to keep the registration active.

Key Highlights:

  • BIS registration validity increased to 5 years
  • Manufacturers can renew the R number only for a 5-year period
  • Every year, manufacturers are required to submit production data along with applicable fees of 1 Year.
  • BIS will allow manufacturers to complete annual renewal in advance of the prescribed due date

Please note that if BIS does not receive the required production data along with the annual fees, provisions related to suspension, deferment, cancellation, or expiry of the license, as specified under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 (Amended to 2026), will be applicable.
